Put on the New
In the 1800s, George Müller was known for caring for over 10,000 orphans in England. But before his life of faith, Müller lived selfishly—stealing, lying, and living for pleasure. One night, he was invited to a Bible study. At first, he only went for the free food. But something stirred in him. Over time, God changed his heart. He gave up his old ways, committed his life to Christ, and started trusting God completely—never asking people for money but praying for every need. God provided every time. Müller’s story reminds us: real change is possible. When we follow Jesus, we leave behind the old life and step into something new.
Scripture Overview
In Ephesians 4:17–32, Paul urges believers to no longer live like people who don’t know God. He says their minds are darkened, their hearts hardened, and their lives are filled with things that pull them away from the truth. But that’s not the way of Jesus. Paul says, “Put off your old self”—the habits and attitudes that come from sin—and “put on the new self,” made to be like God in righteousness and holiness. This means speaking truthfully, being kind instead of angry, working hard, forgiving others, and using our words to build up rather than tear down. It’s not just a list of rules—it’s a picture of a transformed life, shaped by Jesus.
Things to Ponder
What are some “old ways” (habits, words, attitudes) that God might want us to leave behind?
Can you think of a time when it was hard to forgive—but you chose to do it anyway? How did it feel afterward?
Why do you think Paul talks about our words so much in this passage?
What does “putting on the new self” look like in your school, job, or home this week?
How can we encourage each other to live like Jesus—especially when it’s not easy?
Application Challenge
What would it look like for your family to choose one “old” habit to “put off” this week—and replace it with something new? Maybe it’s grumbling, and you replace it with gratitude. Or you let go of sarcasm and try out encouragement instead.
Could God be using these small moments—choosing kindness when you're annoyed, choosing honesty when it’s hard—to shape you into someone more like Jesus? The Holy Spirit is your helper. You’re not changing alone.
Prayer Prompt
God, thank you for calling us into a new life. Help us put off the things that pull us away from You, and give us the courage to live like Jesus every day. Teach us to speak kindly, forgive freely, and love deeply. Change our hearts and habits to match Your heart.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
